Each year, millions of people in the United States buy over 18 million new bicycles for themselves or for others as gifts abandoning many more unused in garages, basements, parking lots, police stations and sheds. The results? Millions of bicycles that would have otherwise been very useful in developing countries are discarded and landed in our already overburdened landfills causing further environmental hazards. Bikes for Africa Initiative a commitment project of the Clinton Global Initiative University 2009 was founded on the basis that these unused bicycles that would have otherwise landed in our landfills could be transformed into a highly valuable resource in developing countries.
President Clinton established the Clinton Global Initiative University to turn ideas into action and to help our world move beyond the current state of globalization to a more integrated global community of shared benefits, responsibilities and values.
BFAI’S programs are focused on meeting the pressing needs for international development, while building critical thinking skills and a sense of environmental stewardship, so the next generation is empowered to make wise decisions about the care of our environment.

CGI U is more than just an event. It is a growing community of young leaders who don't just discuss the world's challenges - they take real, concrete steps toward solving them a specific plan of action that addresses a pressing challenge on their campus, in their community, or in a different part of the world.
Commitments range from installing energy-efficient light bulbs to establishing campus bike share programs, from distributing life-saving water filtration kits to designing medical backpacks for nomadic doctors in Africa. Since the inaugural meeting, nearly 1,000 commitments have been made by students around the world. From presidents to academics, from the boardroom to the classroom, CGI U members from all walks of life are creating positive change.
